Causes of Sewage Backup and the Importance of Knowing Them

There are three common areas where sewer backup problems begin: in the main sewer line, in sewer lines between the main line and building lines (referred to as lateral lines), and the property owner's line. Problems that occur in main sewer lines are the responsibility of the city, while the property owner has to take the responsibility of resolving the problem when the cause of sewer backup is in their own residential pipe line.

The way to prevent sewage backup is to know what causes them. The root causes of sewage backups are three. Some of these can be readily detected and prevented. However, some of them are not readily detected, and are not even known until after sewer backup occurs.

1. Blockage of wastewater pipes

The most frequent cause of sewage backup is the blockage of lateral lines by solid flushes (often done accidentally) from home drains.

Accumulated hair, fibers, and greases that are flushed down drains also cause problems in plumbing systems of offices and homes. Wastewater pipes tend to break down when clogged by tissue papers, garbage, sanitary napkin, debris, and diaper, and glass shards. These materials often exceed the capacity of sewage pipe lines.

Sewage backup caused by solid flushes tend to be localized. The problem of this type is characterized by the backing up of water on your john. The volume of water backup would depend on volume of water used. Turning off the water will cause the water to drown. However, this doesn't fix the problem for the problem will recur the moment you turn on the water.

2. Structural defects

Defects in pipe system such as misaligned joints, cracks, offset joints, holes, and protruding laterals is another major cause of sewage backup.

These structural defects are often hidden and remain undetected until severe sewage backup problems occur. They happen primarily because of the deterioration of wastewater pipe systems. Because they are not readily seen and fixed right away, they worsen over time and lead to major breakdown of the sewage system. This type of problem equally results in serious sewer backups. This type of problem usually requires a complete overhaul or reconstruction of the wastewater system.

3. Root infiltration

If tree roots infiltrate wastewater pipes, they can block the pipes, and even cause the pipes to crack and break.

Other causes of sewer backup include flood and vandalism. Severe flooding causes sewer lines to fill up. If the system fails to drain the floodwater, this results in water backing up through residential drains. Stuffing manholes with sticks, roots, papers, and other solid objects often leads to blockages in city main pipe lines, resulting in sewage backup.

Again, knowing what brings about sewage backup is essential. First and foremost, prevention of sewer backup can be easily done if you know what brings about sewer backup. Since the most common cause of sewage backup is blockages, you can help minimize the occurrence of sewer backup by making sure that you make no solid flushes down your john and water drains. Secondly, if you know the cause of the problem, you will be able to know more readily how to fix the problem or who to call to fix the problem.
